If you listened to John McCain during the third presidential debate you may be scared that the "fabric of democracy" is being undermined by fraudulent voter registration.

What's funny is that although the Democratic campaign is not affiliated with ACORN (the group accused of turning in invalid registration forms), the Republicans continue to employ operatives facing fraud accusations including one who faces criminal perjury charges.

Of course there is no real danger in fraudulent voter registration (Republican or Democrat). Unless the imaginary people who are registered actually show up at the polls to vote, nothing about the election or the democratic process is compromised. This is yet another desperate attempt from an unpopular Republican party to stay in power by scaring ignorant people into trading in their civil liberties for a false sense of security and patriotism.

Sleazy tactics and punches below the belt are nothing new for the Grand Old Party. Sarah Palin, the Republican Vice Presidential pick for the 2008 ticket has constantly insinuated that Obama is somehow linked to terrorism. There are multiple videos on the internet claiming a U.S. Senator is actually a secret Muslim terrorist because of his unique name. And, on October 10th, 300 absentee ballots in NY were sent out with Barack Obama misspelled as Barack Osama.

The Republican Commissioner Larry Bugbee claims that three different people proofread the ballots and somehow this error got past all of them. You might be wondering how this "typo" is even possible, seeing as how the "b" and the "s" are not even remotely close on the keyboard...

As disgusting as this "mistake" is, however, this article is not about the gross incompetence of Republican typists and proofreaders--it is about the dangerous lies that the Republicans are spreading and the effect it has on the country.

Assuming McCain't (oops, typo) looses the 2008 election, what is to become of his radicalized supporters if they are led to believe that Obama won the presidency by some illegitimate or fraudulent means in addition to already believing that he is secretly working with terrorists to destroy their beloved Americuh?

"I can't imagine a President of the United States being named 'President Obama'"

These "Americuhns" already yell things like "terrorist" and "kill him" when the U.S. Senators name is mentioned at McCain and Palin rallies. Is it not legitimate to worry about the reaction of an armed, angry, and misinformed mob when their choice for president looses?

If John McCain were to really put "country first" would he allow his party and his campaign to spread these vicious and disproportionate accusations?

No--in fact, by doing so he is himself destroying the fabric of democracy by polarizing U.S. voters against each other, and by creating an atmosphere where voters loose faith in the democratic process and become disillusioned with the U.S. Government.

The real danger to U.S. is not the fact that Mickey Mouse might be registered to vote in some states. The real danger is that the democratic process is replaced with a "dumbocratic" one. A process where instead of focusing on issues that all voters can agree on (issues like healthcare, the economy, energy independence), voters fall victim to the tried and true Republican lies and scare tactics that have already started to turn the "Land of the Free" into the "Land of the Fearful".
